Programme Offered

The Doctor of Philosophy in Dentistry is a research-based programme that aims to enhance knowledge and application of sciences in dentistry.


Programme Summary

The programme fosters the development of critical analysis and research competence. It also trains students to combine knowledge, skills, and experience to demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning and judgment in a specific practice area.


Life at Faculty

The UKM Faculty of Dentistry is located in the KL campus, next to Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The faculty is renowned as a tertiary referral center for clinical dental services and receives many cases from surrounding areas. As a dental student, you will be able to work closely with various dental specialists and gain hands-on experiences that will enrich your learning process.


Programme Requirements

To apply for the doctoral programme, a person should have:


  • A Master's Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or have accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or an institution with accreditation as prescribed by a programme
  • Other qualifications equivalent to a master's degree or other qualifications with experience recognized by the Senate
  • A student currently pursuing a full-time master's programme under sub-regulation 6 (a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty's/Institute's Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/Director
  • A Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or with accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Board
  • Any other qualification recognized by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
  • Fulfill other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable)
  • Fulfill requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)

English Language Proficiency Requirements

An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:


  1. Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfill the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme
  2. For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme.
