Program Overview


Program Overview

The program offered by the Institut Informatik Visual (IVI) is a Master's program in research mode and thesis. Candidates are required to complete 6 credits of coursework, thesis writing, and a viva voce examination to graduate. Additionally, candidates must present their research proposal and findings at the end of their study period. The presentation will be evaluated by the supervisor and the Graduate Committee. As an additional requirement for graduation, candidates must publish at least one journal article (accepted for publication) and present their research findings at a related conference before graduating.


Research Areas

Research at IVI covers cutting-edge technologies and plays a crucial role in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Virtual Reality, Autonomous Systems, System Integration, Additive Manufacturing, Big Data Analysis, Robotics, and Cybersecurity. The institute is fortunate to have an International Advisory Board consisting of credible individuals from academia and industry, representing countries such as the United Kingdom, Europe, Taiwan, and Malaysia. To date, IVI has 15 Senior Research Fellows and more than 50 Associate Fellows from various fields, including engineering, computer science, medicine, and economics. All fellows at the institute are experienced researchers (100% with PhDs) with a deep interest and dedication to their research areas and extensive experience collaborating with industry partners.


Admission Requirements

Local Students

Candidates who wish to apply for the Doctoral program must have the following qualifications:


  1. A Bachelor's degree with a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a university or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or accredited by the relevant program; or
  2. A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Dentistry degree from a university or any institution of higher learning or a degree equivalent to it from any other higher learning institution recognized by the Senate; or
  3. Other qualifications recognized by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APPT); or meet other requirements set by the program (if applicable); and meet the requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

International Students

Candidates who wish to apply for the Doctoral program must have the following qualifications:


  1. A Bachelor's degree with a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a university or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or accredited by the relevant program; or
  2. A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Dentistry degree from a university or any institution of higher learning or a degree equivalent to it from any other higher learning institution recognized by the Senate; or
  3. Other qualifications recognized by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APPT); or meet other requirements set by the program (if applicable); and meet the requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

English Proficiency Requirements

  1. International candidates are required to meet the English language proficiency requirements as follows:
    • Obtain a TOEFL (550), IELTS (6), or MUET (4) score that meets the minimum score or band requirements set by the program; or
    • Sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if the candidate fails to achieve the level determined by the program, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) within a maximum period of two (2) semesters before being allowed to register for the study program. The candidate must register as a Non-Graduate Student.
  2. The Faculty/Institute may exempt the requirements stated in sub-regulation (1) for international candidates who:
    • Will write their thesis/dissertation in Malay/Arabic;
    • Have academic qualifications obtained from any local university recognized by the Senate; or
    • Come from a country where English is the official language or have academic qualifications obtained from any institution of higher learning that uses English as the medium of instruction.

Application Procedure

  1. Candidates must apply online through the official website.
  2. Intake for course work mode and mixed mode is open twice a year, in October (admission in March the following year) and April (admission in October).
  3. Applications for research mode programs can be made at any time throughout the year.
  4. The duration for the Master's program requires 2 to 4 semesters for full-time study and 4 to 8 semesters for part-time study, and for the Doctor of Philosophy program, it is 6 to 12 semesters for full-time study and 8 to 14 semesters for part-time study.
