Program Overview


Introduction to the Optometry Program

The Optometry program is a field that involves the examination and management of vision problems and eye diseases to restore visual function and maintain eye health. The program duration is at least four years or eight semesters.


Program Structure

In the first two years, students learn basic courses in eye health and vision, eye diseases, vision optics, and optometry clinic procedures. The learning shifts from theory to clinical applications of optometry in the following two years. Clinical teaching includes primary optometry clinics, contact lens clinics, and specialty clinics such as binocular vision clinics, pediatric clinics, and low vision clinics.

Admission Requirements

General Requirements

  • Candidates must meet the general requirements set by the university.

Specific Requirements for Matrikulasi KPM/Asasi Candidates

  • Obtain a minimum PNGK of 3.00 at the Matrikulasi KPM/Asasi level.
  • Obtain a minimum grade of B (NGMP 3.00) at the Matrikulasi KPM/Asasi level in the following subjects:
    • Biology
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Mathematics/Mathematics (M)/Mathematics (T)
  • Pass with a minimum of 5 subjects with Grade C at the SPM level, including three of the following subjects:
    • Biology
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Mathematics/Mathematics (M)/Mathematics (T)
  • Obtain a minimum Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for exams starting from semester 1, 2021, or Band 3 for exams until 2020, following the validity period on the application date, or Band 5.5 in IELTS, or a score of 46 in TOEFL, or Band 7 in the Higher Education English Test (HEET), or equivalent.
  • Pass the exam and/or interview set by the faculty.

Specific Requirements for STPM Candidates

  • Obtain a minimum grade of B- (NGMP 2.67) at the STPM level in the following subjects:
    • Biology
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Mathematics/Mathematics (M)/Mathematics (T)
  • Obtain a minimum Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for exams starting from semester 1, 2021, or Band 3 for exams until 2020, following the validity period on the application date, or Band 5.5 in IELTS, or a score of 46 in TOEFL, or Band 7 in the Higher Education English Test (HEET), or equivalent.
  • Pass the exam and/or interview set by the faculty.

Requirements for Diploma Holders

  • Hold a Diploma in Science/Health Science or an equivalent diploma from an institution recognized by the university, with a minimum PNGK of 3.50.
  • Submit academic transcripts from semester one to the final semester.
  • Obtain a minimum Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for exams starting from semester 1, 2021, or Band 3 for exams until 2020, following the validity period on the application date, or Band 5.5 in IELTS, or a score of 46 in TOEFL, or Band 7 in the Higher Education English Test (HEET), or equivalent.
  • Pass the exam and/or interview set by the faculty.
