Introduction to the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, UKM

The Department of Paediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), offers a comprehensive program in paediatrics for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department is committed to providing high-quality education, research, and clinical services in the field of paediatrics.

The program is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of paediatrics, including the diagnosis, treatment, and management of various paediatric conditions. Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students should be able to:


  • Demonstrate the ability to take an adequate history and perform a competent clinical examination of a child
  • Discuss normal growth patterns and common growth problems
  • Describe the principles of infant nutrition and breastfeeding practices
  • Discuss the importance of developmental assessment in a child
  • Formulate provisional and differential diagnoses based on information obtained from the history and physical examination
  • Correlate clinical diseases with the knowledge of pathophysiology acquired
  • Utilize relevant investigations and interpret common laboratory results and radiological studies to confirm the diagnosis
  • Formulate principles of management based on current evidence
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and convey information in a way that is understood by parents and the child

Assessment

The assessment for the program consists of:


  • Continuous Assessment (30%): case report, logbook, participation in group discussion, seminars, and team-based learning
  • Theory Examination (35%): objective-based assessment, extended matching questions, and knowledge-based questions
  • Clinical Examination (35%): unmanned OSCE and manned OSCE

Passing Criteria

To pass the module, students must pass the continuous assessment and each component of the semester exam.
