Program Overview
The Department of Surgery at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is committed to providing comprehensive care and treatment for pediatric patients, as well as offering specialized training for pediatric surgeons and engaging in clinical research.
Program Introduction
The Pediatric Surgery Specialist Program is designed to produce well-rounded and skilled pediatric surgeons. The program duration is 4 years, with a maximum of 7 years to complete.
Learning Objectives
The program's learning objectives are:
- Graduates will understand and master the principles of pediatric surgery.
- Graduates will be able to identify cases that can be managed independently and those that require referral to more qualified specialists.
- Graduates will understand the risks and causes of diseases and be able to treat and prevent them.
- Graduates will maintain a professional attitude in patient care, following ethical guidelines and respecting colleagues and team members.
- Graduates will practice self-audit and team audit to ensure high-quality work.
Program Schedule
The program schedule is as follows:
- Year 1: 6 months at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM)/Hospital Pakar Kanak-Kanak (HPKK) and 6 months at Hospital Tuanku Azizah (HTA) KL
- Year 2: 6 months at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM), 4 months at Hospital Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM), and 2 months of PICU and NICU rotation at recognized hospitals
- Year 3: 1 year at recognized KKM hospitals
- Year 4: 6 months at recognized KKM hospitals/HTA and 6 months at HCTM/HPKK

Program Activities
- Research and Publication
- Conducting at least one high-quality research activity approved by the University Ethics Committee
- Presenting research or surgical case reports at national or international conferences
- Publishing research findings in high-impact journals
- Clinical Teaching and Learning
- Participating in clinical teaching and learning activities, including clinical consultations, ward rounds, and surgical sessions
- Conducting lectures and presentations by students and specialist surgeons
- Intensive preparation courses for exams
- Workshops to enhance surgical skills, such as laparoscopy and hypospadias
- Basic endoscopy training
- Service and Administration
- Participating in community service activities, such as Sunathon, Motivation Day, and Bakti Insan
- Mentoring new students through the Buddies System
Program Details
The program is designed to provide comprehensive training in pediatric surgery, with a focus on clinical research, teaching, and service. The program's curriculum is structured to ensure that graduates acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become competent pediatric surgeons.
