Clinical Fellowship in Quality and Patient Safety in Healthcare

Programme Overview

The Clinical Fellowship in Quality and Patient Safety in Healthcare is a 12-month training program designed to equip candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to determine the domain/components of quality and patient safety measurement in healthcare settings.


Course Director

The program is led by Prof. Dr. Aniza Ismail.


Training Centres

The training will take place at the Department of Public Health Medicine UKM, 56000 Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.


Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, candidates must meet the following criteria:


  • Be an independent and certified Public Health Physician (Malaysian) or have completed a recognized public health specialist training (for overseas candidates) with an interest in quality and patient safety in healthcare settings.
  • Have completed an attachment in any facilities that cover the 5 areas of Health Services Management (Annex 1) or have working experience in Health Management related programs after specialist training for a minimum of 3 years (for non-Malaysian candidates).
  • Submit a current resume with two referees and a standing letter from the employer/institution for the program application.

Objectives of Programme

By the end of the program, candidates should be able to:


  1. Determine the domain/components of quality and patient safety measurement in healthcare settings.
  2. Develop indicators to measure quality and patient safety outcomes.
  3. Apply critical thinking, evidence-based medicine, and value-based medicine in decision-making to improve quality and patient safety.
  4. Exhibit leadership skills, teamwork, caring, effective communication, and professionalism in the workplace.

Activities/Task

Candidates will be involved in the following activities:


  1. Evaluate current quality indicators at hospitals or public health settings.
  2. Review existing certifications and accreditations of standard care at the setting.
  3. Collaborate with multidisciplinary professionals and agencies in proposing a plan of action to increase the quality of care.
  4. Participate in supervision training, scientific seminar discussions, or journal appraisals at the department.
  5. Record experience activities in a student-led customized logbook.
  6. Schedule meetings with the supervisor during the fellowship program for progress monitoring.
  7. Submit at least one technical report/policy paper/article in an indexed journal.

Certificate of Completion

A Certificate of Completion of training, certified by the Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine UKM, will be awarded to all successful candidates.


Requirements

Candidates must:


  1. Apply at least 6 months before the intended start date.
  2. Obtain a Temporary Practising Certificate (TPC) by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), ensuring all requirements for TPC are fulfilled.
