Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM)

Programme Overview

The Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM) is a comprehensive program designed to produce pediatricians with a special interest in neonatology. The program aims to equip candidates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to manage complex neonatal medical and post-operative care cases.


Course Director

The Course Director for the Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM) is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shareena Ishak.


Duration of Training

The duration of training for the Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM) is 6 months to 3 years.


Training Centres

The training center for the Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM) is Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, Cheras 56000 Kuala Lumpur.


Eligibility

To be eligible for the Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM), candidates must meet the following requirements:


  • Basic Medical Degree recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council for Temporary Medical Registration.
  • A candidate whose basic medical degree is not recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council, if opting to be temporarily registered (with a TPC) will only be able to enroll in the programme for not more than 12 months.
  • Paediatric Specialist Qualification from home country or internationally recognized diplomae e.g. MRCPCH/Fellowship or Masters in Paediatrics.
  • Ongoing subspecialty training in neonatology in home country but coming over for elective or attachment.

Objectives

The objectives of the Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM) are:


  1. To produce pediatricians with special interest in neonatology (less than three years) or subspecializing as neonatologist (full three years following the curriculum of the Malaysian Medical Council subspecialty board).
  2. To produce neonatologists with competence and experience in managing up to level three of neonatal intensive care and performing the core procedures required in this specialty.

Activities/Task

The activities and tasks for the Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM) include:


  1. Performing all clinical activities at the level of a specialist.
  2. Developing increasing competence in managing general as well as complex neonatal medical and post-operative care cases.
  3. Gaining exposure in interpreting diagnostic and monitoring procedures.
  4. Performing and assisting in as many procedures as required in this hands-on programme.
  5. Keeping a log book and a recommended journal reflection of performance.
  6. Regularly meeting with the course director.
  7. Joining all clinical and academic activities of the unit and department.
  8. Conducting research and audit during the training and publishing at least 1 manuscript in a WOS journal over one year or presenting at a local conference within a six-month stint.

Requirements

The requirements for the Fellowship in Neonatology (UKM) include:


  1. Applying at least 6 months before the intended start date.
  2. Obtaining a Temporary Practising Certificate (TPC) by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
  3. Fulfilling all the requirements for TPC.
  4. Providing a letter of Good Standing from the home country with the application.

Certificate of Completion

A Certificate of completion of training will be given to all eligible candidates, certified by the Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine, UKM.
