The Fellowship in Breast Radiology (UKM) is a comprehensive program designed to equip radiologists with the necessary knowledge and skills in breast imaging and interventional procedures.

Eligibility

  • Independent and certified radiologist or equivalent specialty

Objectives of Programme

  1. To obtain clinical knowledge relevant to surgical, gynecological, and oncology management of diseases such that the trainee may confidently discuss the appropriate imaging strategy and/or interventional technique for the clinical problem with the referring clinician.
  2. In-depth understanding of indications, contraindications, and complications of breast imaging and interventional procedures as well as their relative efficacy compared with other treatment options.
  3. To understand broad principles and techniques associated with breast imaging.
  4. Extensive direct practical exposure with appropriate graded supervision in all forms of appropriate image interpretation and intervention.
  5. Knowledge and skills to enable safe practice of image interpretation and intervention. The trainee should be competent in basic life-support.
  6. Allow trainees to apply their knowledge and skills in the workplace and demonstrate competence to the level of a consultant.
  7. To become familiar with the indications, risks, interpretation, and intervention of the relevant modalities such as mammograms, ultrasound, and stereotactic.
  8. To understand the importance of radiation protection as applied to procedures
  9. To be familiar with some clinical practice guidelines, namely: - Clinical Practice Guidelines for mammogram by the College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine Malaysia. - BI-RADS (Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System) is a risk assessment and quality assurance tool developed by American College of Radiology that provides a widely accepted lexicon and reporting schema for imaging of the breast. It applies to mammography, ultrasound, and MRI.

Activities/Task

  1. Candidate will be required to perform all clinical activities at the level of a specialist and involvement in the pre-, intra-, and post- imaging and procedure assessment and management of patients:
  2. Candidate must attend all related CME conferences, multi-disciplinary, and clinic-radiological discussions.
  3. Candidate must be active in case discussions, work-up, and plan for the cases.
  4. Candidate must keep a log book and an audit of his/her performance.
  5. Candidate is encouraged to submit a case report or present at hospital-based or national level seminars.
  6. Candidate must pass the viva examinations which will be held at mid-term and at one month prior to finishing the programme.

Certificate of Completion

A Certificate of completion of training certified by the Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine UKM, will be given to all successful candidates.


Requirements

  1. Please apply at least 6 months before the intended start date.
  2. You will need a Temporary Practising Certificate (TPC) by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). Please ensure you fulfill all the requirements for TPC.
  3. Application for TPC will be forwarded to MMC by UKM except for the Letter of Good Standing.
  4. Priority is given to candidates who come from centers in need of breast imaging services.
