The Fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology is a specialized training program designed to equip candidates with the necessary skills and knowledge to become competent subspecialists in the field.

Course Director
The Course Director for the Fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Safinaz Mohd Khialdin.
Duration of Training
The duration of training for the program is 1 year for international candidates and up to 3 years for local candidates.
Training Centres
The training center for the program is the Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Cheras (HCTM) located in Kuala Lumpur.
Emoluments
Candidates are required to pay fees to UKM and settle any outstanding amounts due.
Availability of Places
There is only 1 place available per year for the program.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the program, candidates must:
- Possess a recognizable Medical Degree and Post-Graduate Medical Degree qualification in Ophthalmology that is registrable with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
- Provide a letter of offer and/or financial warranty from their employer.
- Submit a list of workshops, courses, and short training programs attended.
- Submit the names of at least two referees, at least one of whom has directly supervised the candidate and can provide a report on the candidate's clinical skills, practice, attitude, and competence.
- Have been in active clinical practice for at least 1 year post-specialist qualification.
Objectives of the Program
The objectives of the program are:
- To become a competent subspecialist capable of assuming a consultant's role.
- To acquire working knowledge of the theoretical basis of the specialty, including its foundations in the basic medical sciences.
- To perform research studies in this discipline and submit a manuscript for publication at the end of the program.
- To be able to address issues of gender, sexual orientation, age, culture, ethnicity, and ethics in a professional manner.
Selection Process
The selection process involves fulfilling the requirements set by the university (UKM) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), as well as an interview by consultants, which may be conducted face-to-face or via tele-interview for international candidates.
Minimum Training Requirement
The minimum training requirement for the program is:
- For local candidates: 3 years of training in an established National Centre, including 1-2 years in the UKMMC unit and at least 1 year of placement in a recognized center in Malaysia or overseas.
- For international candidates: 1 year of training exclusively in the UKMMC unit.
- Successfully conducting and completing a research study in the unit by the completion of training.
- Obtaining a pass in the UKM Fellowship Exit Examination.
Method of Assessment/Certificate
The method of assessment for the program includes:
- Completion of the training logbook, including endorsement by the consultant, Head of Unit, and Head of Department of Ophthalmology in UKMMC.
- Evidence of submission of the research study manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal. A Certificate of Completion of Training, certified by the Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine UKM, will be awarded to successful candidates.
