Programme Overview

The Fellowship in Paediatric ORL & Hearing Implant is a comprehensive training program designed to equip clinical fellows with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage and treat a spectrum of surgical pediatric otolaryngology cases.


Programme Details

    • UKM Specialist Children's Hospital (TABTAR) / Hospital Pakar Kanak Kanak, Cheras 56000 Kuala Lumpur

Eligibility and Objectives

  • Eligibility: Postgraduate certificate in Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery
  • General Objective: The clinical fellow will participate in airway management input to neonatology and all cases evolving from above, including endoscopy, temporal bone lab, undergraduate lectures, daily rounds, weekly service rounds, and weekly staff teaching rounds.
  • Objectives:
    1. To learn the management and treatment of a spectrum of surgical pediatric otolaryngology including pediatric otology and cochlear implantation, airway endoscopy, and open airway reconstructive surgery, pediatric head and neck surgery including vascular malformations.
    2. To perform common paediatric ORL surgery.
    3. To learn multidisciplinary management of paediatric ORL cases.

Activities and Tasks

  • Activities/Task:
    1. Attend all cases unique to pediatric otolaryngology, participate in teaching sessions, perform all clinical activities as a specialist including both in and out-patients.
    2. Responsible for consultations and required to perform common paediatric ORL cases confidently and safely either in elective or emergency settings.
    3. Required to do on-calls.
    4. Attend multidisciplinary combine clinic/meeting.
    5. Observe all the paediatric ORL cases performed by the supervisor.
    6. Assist as many cases as possible both common and advance surgery related to the subspecialty.
    7. Attend course/seminar related to the subspeciality at least once.
    8. Keep a logbook and an audit of performance.
    9. Have regular meetings with the course director/supervisor.
    10. Join all clinical and academic activities of the Unit.
    11. Write at least one clinically focused paper and publish in an index journal.
    12. Pass the viva examination which will be held at the end of the programme.

Certificate of Completion

  • A Certificate of completion of training certified by the Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine UKM will be given to all successful candidates.

Requirements

  • Requirements:
    1. Apply at least 6 months before the intended start date.
    2. Letter of recommendation by 2 senior paediatric ORL surgeons is required.
    3. Required to apply for a Temporary Practising Certificate (TPC) by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
    4. Ensure fulfillment of all requirements for TPC.
    5. Application for TPC will be forwarded to MMC by UKM except for the Letter of Good Standing.
    6. All candidates wishing to pursue the Clinical Fellowship Programme at the Faculty of Medicine, UKM are required to apply for credentialing and privileges prior to commencing the fellowship program.
