Program Overview


Introduction to the Family Nurse Practitioner Program

The Family Nurse Practitioner track at Cizik School of Nursing offers an innovative and affordable option for working nurses to provide primary care to patients across the lifespan. The program prepares students to work in clinics and other outpatient settings, with the option to continue their studies in the Emergency Nurse Practitioner track.


Program Overview

The Family Nurse Practitioner track emphasizes health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, and illness management. The curriculum includes online coursework, in-person lab and simulation requirements, and clinical experiences in the Texas Medical Center or at contracted clinical sites throughout the state.


Program Options

Cizik School of Nursing currently offers two options for prospective FNP students:


  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree
    • BSN to DNP track for students with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree

BSN-DNP FNP Track

  • Admit Terms: Spring and Fall
  • Completion: 10 semesters
  • Credit Requirements: 79 credit hours, 1,140 clinical hours
  • Educational Mode: Online and on-campus courses
  • Enrollment Level: Mix of full-time and part-time semesters
  • Tuition: Among the lowest in the state

MSN FNP Track

  • Admit Terms: Spring and Fall
  • Average Completion: 5-7 semesters
  • Credit Requirements: 41 credit hours, 660 clinical hours
  • Educational Mode: Online and on-campus courses
  • Enrollment Level: Full-time or part-time
  • Tuition: Among the lowest in the state

Certification and Licensure

Upon completion of the program, students can apply to take the national FNP certification exam offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB). Once certified, students can apply for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in Texas.


Emergency Nurse Practitioner Certificate

Students who are enrolled in the FNP specialty track are eligible to request admission to the Emergency Nurse Practitioner concentration. Didactic courses will be taken concurrently, while the clinical component will be completed the semester after graduation from the FNP track.

Financial Assistance

The school offers merit and need-based scholarships, grants, and financial assistance, including 25 traineeships annually to students interested in working in rural or urban underserved areas. Scholarships and traineeships range from $1,000 to full tuition offers.
