Program Overview
General Practice Residency (GPR) Program
The General Practice Residency (GPR) is a one-year hospital-based dentistry program affiliated with Memorial Hermann Hospital. The facility supports all clinical and didactic components of the program.
Program Description
Instruction includes a full range of training areas such as:
- Comprehensive care to medically compromised and special needs patients
- Inpatient care
- Medical management
- History and physicals
- Conscious sedation
- General anesthesia
- Diagnosis and treatment planning
- Restorative dentistry
- Fixed and removable prosthodontics, including implant restoration
Program Structure
Residents may identify major areas of interest, such as specific clinical disciplines, teaching, or research. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, residents receive a certificate in general practice from the School of Dentistry. The program also offers positions in the optional second-year program to a finishing first-year resident.
Second-Year Program
The second year is unique and includes advanced instructions in identified major interest of the resident, such as:
- Specific clinical disciplines
- Research
- The opportunity to teach students at the pre-doctoral level
Admission Requirements
Admission requirements include:
- Graduation from an ADA-accredited dental school
- Application through ADEA PASS
- Meeting specific program requirements, which can be found in the Academic Catalog
Admission from Non-ADA Accredited Schools
Applicants who graduated from non-ADA accredited dental schools may apply for a minimum six-month preceptorship in general dentistry. Completion of the preceptorship does not guarantee admission.
