Doctor of Nursing Practice Program

General Information

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing prepares nurses to participate in the transformation of health care, with an emphasis on improving access to quality care for all populations.


Doctor of Nursing Practice Pathways

The DNP program consists of three pathways:


  • BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice (Nurse Practitioner)
  • BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice (Nurse Anesthesia)
  • MSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice

DNP Program Outcomes

Graduates of the DNP program will demonstrate the ability to:


  • Translate science and theory from nursing and other disciplines to create the basis for the highest level of nursing practice
  • Apply current and emerging evidence to the provision of quality, holistic, and equitable person-centered health care
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to improve population health outcomes
  • Evaluate evidence and nursing knowledge to inform nursing practice, improve health, and transform health care
  • Apply principles of safety and improvement science to improve health care and health care systems
  • Collaborate with other professionals and team members to improve health care systems and patient outcomes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical, regulatory, and legal standards and principles for selecting and using technology and information systems
  • Participate in ethical leadership practices that promote accountability, life-long learning, self-reflection, nurse well-being, and advocacy for the nursing profession

BSN-DNP Nurse Anesthesia graduates will also demonstrate the foundational practice competencies required for Nurse Anesthesia practice.
