Heartsaver CPR AED Course
The Heartsaver CPR AED course trains participants to give CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. This course reflects science and education from the American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
Course Objectives
The AHA Heartsaver CPR AED Course is designed for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements. This course teaches:
- How high-quality CPR improves survival
- The concepts of the Chain of Survival
- When someone needs CPR
- How to perform high-quality CPR for an adult
- How to perform CPR with help from others
- How to give effective breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups
- How to use an AED on an adult
- How to perform high-quality CPR for a child
- How to use an AED on a child
- How to perform high-quality CPR for an infant
- When and how to help a choking adult or child
- How to help a choking infant
Course Requirements
To participate in the course, students are expected to:
- Be prompt for class start times. No one will be allowed into class once the first video portion of the class has begun.
- Read the appropriate Student workbook for the assigned class.
- Demonstrate mastery of CPR/First Aid skills during the course.
Materials Needed
Students should bring the following materials to class:
- UTMB Badge (if applicable)
- Current Heartsaver CPR AED Student Workbook (ISBN# 978-0)
