Program Overview
Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship Program
The Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch is designed to provide advanced knowledge and expertise in the area of advanced heart failure management. The primary objectives of the program are to assist devices, both percutaneous and surgical, and the increasing role of AICDs, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and remote monitoring.
About the Program
The program is a Texas Medical Board (TMB) non-ACGME accredited fellowship. Currently, three fellows are accepted each year for this one-year fellowship at the PGY4 level. The goal of the training program is to train outstanding Advanced Heart Failure fellows who excel in all areas of the six core competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
Training Overview
The training program views professionalism as one of the most important attributes of Advanced Heart Failure cardiologists and encourages the fellows to strive for and attain the highest level of professionalism that lasts a lifetime.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities of Advanced Heart Failure fellows include the evaluation and care of all patients referred for heart failure management. The program will provide sufficient experience for the fellows to acquire skill and proficiency in the performance and interpretation of:
- History and physical examinations
- Basic and advanced cardiac life support
- Right heart catheterization
- Endomyocardial biopsies
- Percutaneous assist devices such as IABP (intra-aortic balloon pump), Impella assist device, or others such as percutaneous ECMO
- Surgical assist devices (HeartMate II, HeartWare, and HeartMate III)
- Heart transplant
- Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
- Evaluation and interpretation of ICDs and CRTs
- Remote monitoring management
- Nuclear imaging (myocardial viability studies and perfusion images)
- Echocardiography
Fellows will be expected to actively participate in meaningful research and are highly encouraged to complete a project suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Eligibility and Requirements for the Program
To be eligible for the program, applicants must:
- Have completed an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency program
- Provide recommendation letters supporting the character, professionalism, and fitness of the candidate for the future Advance Heart Failure and Transplant cardiologist
- Be a permanent resident or US Citizen, as the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology non-accredited program only accepts these applicants
Application Timeline
The application timeline for the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology Fellowship is as follows:
- October 6, 2025 - December 31, 2025: Deadline to apply and to be considered for the fellowship starting July 1, 2026
- January 1, 2026 - January 15, 2026: The program will review applicants
- January 16, 2026 - January 30, 2026: The program will host interviews
- End of January to First of February 2026: Final decisions and offer letters will be sent
