Introduction to the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital is a one-year program that accepts applications from highly qualified physicians who are board-eligible in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. The program requires the completion of a three-year Cardiology fellowship program and full training in cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography. Currently, three fellows are accepted each year.

About the Program

The purpose of this ACGME-accredited training program is to produce outstanding interventional cardiologists who excel in all six areas of core competencies in interventional cardiology:

• Patient care
• Medical knowledge
• Practice-based learning and improvement
• Interpersonal and communication skills
• Professionalism
• Systems-based practice At the end of the training program, the fellows are expected to be fully capable of independently performing coronary interventional procedures.

Training Overview

Training takes place in various locations on the campus, including the cardiac catheterization laboratory, coronary care unit, step-down unit, outpatient clinic, conference rooms, offices, and homes of interventional faculty. The program director and interventional faculty are highly accessible to all interventional fellows and mentor and coach them to be outstanding interventional cardiologists.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of clinical interventional cardiology fellows include:

• Evaluation and care of all patients referred for interventional procedures
• Direct participation in all those procedures under the supervision of the senior interventional cardiologist
• Participation in 300 procedures, including complex coronary and peripheral interventions, and interventions on structural heart diseases
• Active participation in clinical trials related to interventional cardiology
• Review of incoming referrals for interventional procedures and communication with referring physicians in a timely fashion
• Completion of a research project suitable for publication in a peer-review journal
• Availability to the hospital within 30 minutes of the activation of the cardiac catheterization laboratory when on call
• Completion of assigned didactic courses

Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must:

1. Successfully complete an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency and General Cardiology Fellowship Programs and be board-eligible for ABIM Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine
2. Submit a completed application through the ERAS
3. Provide three recommendation letters supporting the character, professionalism, and fitness of the candidate for the future interventional cardiology career
4. Have an appropriate visa status (note: the program does not sponsor H1 B visa)
5. Be willing to adhere to the rules and policies of the interventional fellowship training program as delineated in the UTMB Interventional Fellowship Handbook

• July 15: Earliest date for applications
• September 1: Latest date for applications
• September 1 - October 30: Interview period The program participates in the NRMP match and offers pre-match positions, with July positions filled.
