Internal Medicine Residency Outpatient Training
Program Overview
Internal Medicine Residency Program
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UTMB Health provides a comprehensive and well-structured training experience for residents. The program is designed to equip residents with the necessary skills and knowledge to become proficient in the practice of internal medicine.
Program Overview
The program is led by a team of experienced faculty members who are dedicated to providing a supportive and stimulating learning environment. The program is divided into several components, including clinical training, education, and research.
Clinical Training Sites
Residents in the program have the opportunity to train at several clinical sites, including:
- Inpatient Training: Residents participate in inpatient training at UTMB's hospitals, where they gain hands-on experience in managing patients with a wide range of medical conditions.
- Outpatient Training: Residents also participate in outpatient training at UTMB's clinics, where they learn to manage patients in an ambulatory setting.
Outpatient Training
The outpatient training component of the program is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive experience in managing patients in an ambulatory setting. Each resident is assigned to a clinic corresponding to their team, where they see patients and follow them throughout their training. The clinics are equipped with necessary medical equipment and individual computer stations, and residents have access to team rooms where they can discuss cases with faculty preceptors and complete documentation.
Continuity Clinics
The continuity clinics are held at three locations: The Primary Care Pavilion, Victory Lakes Multispecialty Center, and Coastal Health and Wellness. Patients from diverse backgrounds are seen at each site, providing residents with a robust outpatient training experience. Residents spend one month on a clinic-selective rotation, during which they experience an extended continuity clinic with half-days in their team's clinic.
Curriculum
The program's curriculum is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive education in internal medicine. The curriculum includes:
- Conferences: Regular conferences are held to discuss various topics in internal medicine, including case presentations, journal clubs, and didactic lectures.
- Simulation and POCUS: Residents participate in simulation training and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to develop their clinical skills.
- Board Preparation: The program provides residents with preparation for the internal medicine board exam.
- QI and Patient Safety: Residents learn about quality improvement and patient safety principles and practices.
- Research: Residents have the opportunity to participate in research projects and present their findings at conferences.
- Community Medicine: Residents learn about community medicine and participate in outreach programs.
- Wellness: The program prioritizes resident wellness and provides resources to support residents' physical and mental health.
Career Development
The program provides residents with career development opportunities, including:
- Fellowships: Residents can pursue fellowships in various subspecialties of internal medicine.
- Primary Care: Residents can choose to pursue a career in primary care, with opportunities to work in outpatient settings.
- Hospitalist Medicine: Residents can also choose to pursue a career in hospitalist medicine, with opportunities to work in inpatient settings.
- Mentoring Program: The program provides a mentoring program, where residents are paired with experienced faculty members who provide guidance and support throughout their training.
