Program Overview


Introduction to the Skaggs School of Pharmacy

The Skaggs School of Pharmacy at the University of Montana offers a range of programs for prospective students, including the GrizRx Assurance Program. This program is designed for high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.


Eligibility for the GrizRx Assurance Program

To be eligible for the GrizRx Assurance Program, students must have an unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and be admitted to the University of Montana as an incoming freshman. The application deadline for the program is April 1.


Benefits of the GrizRx Assurance Program

The GrizRx Assurance Program offers several benefits to students, including:


  • Dedicated pharmacy faculty advisors who provide individualized support during the pre-pharmacy program
  • Opportunities for pharmacy job shadowing or volunteer work connected with the UM Skaggs School of Pharmacy
  • Opportunities to do research with Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty
  • GrizRx Assurance Program scholarships available
  • Assistance identifying and completing applications for other scholarships and financial support

Requirements for the GrizRx Assurance Program

To participate in the GrizRx Assurance Program, students must:


  • Complete the pre-pharmacy curriculum within two years
  • Complete all pharmacy prerequisite courses with at least a C- grade
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • Complete 20 hours of observation, preferably in a pharmacy
  • Submit a PharmCAS application and complete an interview

Advanced Options Information

The Skaggs School of Pharmacy accepts Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Project Lead the Way, and Dual Enrollment credits. The following Advanced Options are accepted for prerequisites:


AP Examinations

  • Calculus AB: minimum score 3, equivalent to M 171, satisfies Calculus prerequisite, 4 UM credits
  • English Language and Composition: minimum score 3, equivalent to WRIT 101, satisfies English Composition prerequisite, 6 UM credits
  • Psychology: minimum score 3, equivalent to PSYX 100S, satisfies Social Science prerequisite, 3 UM credits
  • Statistics: minimum score 3, equivalent to STAT 216, satisfies Statistics prerequisite, 3 UM credits

IB Examinations

  • Language A: English-Language & Literature: HL level, score 4, equivalent to LIT 110L/WRIT 101, satisfies English Composition prerequisite, 3 UM credits
  • Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation: HL level, score 4, equivalent to M 162/STAT 216, satisfies Calculus or Statistics prerequisite, 4 UM credits
  • Psychology: SL level, score 4, equivalent to PSYX TR1S, satisfies Social Science prerequisite, 3 UM credits

CLEP Examinations

  • College Composition: minimum score 50, satisfies English Composition prerequisite, 6 semester credits
  • Calculus: minimum score 50, satisfies Calculus prerequisite, 4 semester credits

Transition to the PharmD Program

Students in the GrizRx Assurance Program who complete the pre-pharmacy curriculum and meet the program's requirements are guaranteed a seat in the PharmD program. To claim their seat, students must meet the requirements outlined above and submit a PharmCAS application and complete an interview.
