Graduate Certificate - Reading Education

This program is designed for those pursuing a teaching endorsement in another content area or for currently licensed teachers. Students must be formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program and complete all professional education licensure requirements.


Admission Requirements

  • Students must be formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program.
  • Completion of all professional education licensure requirements is required.
  • The program is intended for those seeking a teaching endorsement in another content area or for currently licensed teachers.

Course Requirements

The following courses are required for the Reading Education Graduate Certificate:


  • EDU 432: Literature & Literacy for Young Adults (3 hours)
  • EDU 438: Literacy Assessment, Diagnosis, & Instruction (3 hours)
  • EDU 481: Content Area Literacy (3 hours)
  • EDU 557: Advanced Literacy Practicum K12 (3 hours)

Total Hours: 12


Additional Requirements for Licensure

Those seeking licensure in K-12 reading in Montana must also show course equivalency for EDU 331, EDU 339, EDU 397, and EDU 497, or complete these courses as part of their program of study.


General Graduate Program Requirements

  • The minimum GPA for any graduate program is 3.0. Individual programs may require more than a 3.0 to remain in good standing.
  • The minimum grade for a course to be accepted toward any requirement is C. Individual programs may require higher grades for specific courses.
