Semester Program in Seville, Spain

The Semester Program in Seville, Spain is an interdisciplinary study program that focuses on areas related to:


  • Spanish literature and language
  • The visual arts
  • The cultural history of the city of Sevilla

  • Economics and international relations
  • Medieval, modern and contemporary Spanish history
  • Politics
  • Linguistics and translation studies

Program Details

The program is administered through a partnership with Centro MundoLengua and takes place at Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO), a relatively small Spanish university with 7,000 students. UPO is connected to downtown Sevilla by the metro. The university offers courses for international students at the upper-intermediate level of language study, as well as mainstream courses with Spanish college students targeted for more advanced Spanish language students.


Service-Learning Seminar and Internship

A key feature of the program is the Service-Learning Seminar and Internship, a four-credit seminar that explores contemporary issues related to Seville's changing social landscape. Topics may include:


  • Immigration
  • Minority populations and civil rights
  • Women and society
  • Health care
  • Disability studies Throughout the semester, seminar students work as volunteers at a local outreach community agency that serves special populations. William & Mary students with requisite language skills may apply for enrollment in this course.

Location

Seville is considered Spain's most beautiful city and is located in the heart of the Spanish south. It is the capital of the political autonomous region, Andalucía, and is home to flamenco's musical traditions as well as Islamic history and architecture in Spain.
