Program Overview


2021 Summer Fashion Program

The 2021 Summer Fashion Program is a sub-program of Shanghai Summer School, hosted by Donghua University. The program aims to help participants gain a profound understanding of Chinese traditional costumes and their modern development.


Program Theme

The program's theme is "Wearable 3D Printing and Traditional Chinese Clothing." It guides students to understand and create traditional Chinese clothing from the perspective of wearable 3D printing.


Program Overview

With the advancement of science and technology, 3D printing has grown from a hot topic of social speculation to a mature and reliable industrial technology. The global 3D printing market is expected to exceed $22 billion in 2022. In this project, students will combine the most cutting-edge fashion trends with Chinese traditional culture as the theme and use the latest flexible 3D printing technology to carry out innovative development of fashion products.


Program Schedule

The program will take place from July 5 to July 30 at Donghua University's Yan'an Road Campus in downtown Shanghai.


Program Structure

The program is divided into four weeks:


  • WEEK1: Fundamental Camp
  • WEEK2: Design Methodology & Initial Design
  • WEEK3: Detail Design & Cultural Immersion
  • WEEK4: Assembling & Presentation

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of three parts:


A) 3D Printing Theory and Technology Study

Students will learn the basic knowledge, development, and application of 3D printing technology in the fashion industry, as well as the necessary digital creation skills for innovative practice.


B) Introduction to the Culture of Traditional Chinese Clothing

Students will learn about the art and history of traditional Chinese clothing, as well as the comparison between Chinese and western clothing cultures.


C) Flexible 3D Printing Fashion Workshop

Students will create a series of 3D printed fashion products under the guidance of teachers, with full technical support from Covestro, a subsidiary of Bayer.


Admission and Benefits

  • Admitted participants will have their application fee and tuition fee waived.
  • On-campus accommodation will be provided for free during the designated period.
  • Those who complete all required courses will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Eligibility

The program is open to:


  • Participants who are currently in mainland China and hold a valid visa/Residence Permit.
  • Non-Chinese students or enthusiasts with a design background in fields such as fashion design, industrial design, product design, accessory design, or digital media.

Program Details

  • The program will be taught in English.
  • Travel costs to and from Donghua University should be afforded by the participants.
  • Seats are limited, and registration should be completed before June 25, 2021.
