Program Overview

The subject PPP153 Investigative Practice 1A aims to develop investigative skills in line with the legal requirements of the NSW Police Force and the NSW criminal justice system. This subject introduces critical and logical thinking, crime scene processes, note-taking, and develops statement preparation skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:


  • Apply STOPAR as a critical thinking framework in policing scenarios
  • Explain the investigative process applicable to the NSW Police Force
  • Perform basic level investigative functions applicable to the role of a General Duties Constable
  • Explain the PEACE model of investigative interviewing relating to willing/cooperative participants at an introductory level
  • Perform basic crime scene processes and functions
  • Explain the importance of information and intelligence gathering and dissemination in the policing environment

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:


  • The STOPAR model of professional decision-making
  • The law as it applies to NSW police investigations
  • Basic level investigative functions applicable to the role of a General Duties Constable
  • The PEACE model of investigative interviewing of witnesses and victims of crime and statement taking
  • Management of crime scenes and evidence gathering
  • Intelligence gathering and reporting in the policing environment

Residential School

This subject contains a 11-day Compulsory Residential School, which covers all three subjects due to the integrated nature of the delivery of the curriculum. The residential school includes lectures, tutorials, cops training, practical simulations, and role plays to provide practice and application opportunities.
