Program Overview
GRP225 Experimental Design
This subject will explore ways of combining digital applications with a variety of alternative techniques and processes. The emphasis will be on developing a thorough analysis of a design challenge and exploring form, function and approach leading to innovative and imaginative solutions. The students will document and critically examine all stages of the project from their initial concepts through to completion. Sustainability, as well as cultural and ethical issues, will be considered throughout the design process.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to critically analyse and validate various experimental techniques and processes as a means to producing design solutions
- be able to critically evaluate ideas from various perspectives (designer, client and consumer) throughout the design process using prototyping, user testing, self-evaluation and critiquing
- be able to demonstrate an ability to research, design, develop and produce a resolved design outcome in the context of a contemporary design practice

This subject will cover the following topics:
- Creation and development of visual responses: design theory, typography, aesthetics, composition and construction of meaning
- Approaches to information design/architecture
- Design process and practice (includes meta-disciplinary approaches)
- Environmental and cultural sustainability and its associated design implications in whole of life-cycle systems
- Cultural preservation and cultural creation
- Contemporary design in context: recognition and understanding issues related to the cognitive, social, cultural, physical, technological and economic
- Utilisation of tools and technology and their influences on exploration and innovation
