Introduction to BMS327 Integrating Paramedic Trauma Science

BMS327 Integrating Paramedic Trauma Science is a subject that integrates the principles of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, psychology, and sociology with assessment findings and patient histories to formulate a differential diagnosis and implement a treatment plan for patients with trauma, environmental, or toxicological emergencies.

Subject Description

This subject investigates disease processes in all age ranges, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Internal students will demonstrate patient assessment, paramedic skills, judgment, communication, and decision-making in a high-fidelity patient simulation environment. Distance education students must be engaged in paramedic clinical practice and be able to apply and reflect upon their experiences assessing and treating patients in the field.

Availability

The subject is available in the following sessions:

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Perform accurate differential diagnosis based on evidence gained from clinical data, paramedic science, and paramedic research for patients with traumatic injuries, environmental conditions, or toxicological emergencies.
  • Critically reflect on practice and identify strategies to improve clinical reasoning and patient care.
  • Develop and implement safe and effective treatment plans for complex patient scenarios involving traumatic injuries, environmental conditions, and toxicological exposures.
  • Demonstrate a sound ethical and professional disposition, including effective communication with patients, bystanders, the paramedic team, and other healthcare professionals.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

  • Trauma overview, mechanism of injury, patient assessment, airway management, and shock management (10%)
  • Head and facial trauma, spinal trauma, thoracic and abdominal trauma (30%)
  • Soft tissue and musculoskeletal trauma (20%)
  • Environmental conditions (10%)
  • Toxicology - poisoning, overdose, and envenomation (30%)

Residential School

This subject contains a 5-day compulsory residential school. The purpose of the residential school is to demonstrate and practice clinical skills in a safe environment for the student, allowing them to receive timely feedback and support from hands-on experience. The residential school will include activities such as advanced scene management safety of patients in traumatic emergencies and advanced trauma procedures and intervention for patient management.
