EMG706 Literature Review for HDR

This subject covers the theory and skills involved in developing a literature review at the Doctoral level. At its completion, students should be thoroughly conversant with the literature of their intended area of study and understand the major theories, methodological assumptions, key concepts, issues, problems, areas of neglect, and newly acquired knowledge within their selected and related areas of study. The literature review provides a rationale for research and a justification of its value and significance for professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

• be able to plan and execute a framework and attenuate objectives for a critical exploration of the literature pertaining to their field of investigation, scholarship or professional practice;
• be able to demonstrate cognitive skills and use of intellectual independence to think critically, evaluate existing knowledge and ideas, undertake systematic investigation and reflect on theory and practice to generate original knowledge in their field of investigation, scholarship or professional practice;
• be able to demonstrate communication skills to present cogently a complex investigation of the literature for external examination against international standards and to communicate results to peers and the community; and
• be able to generate a substantial body of knowledge at the frontier of their field of investigation, scholarship or professional practice, including knowledge that constitutes an original contribution.
