VSC713 Clinical Research Dissertation

This subject is undertaken over multiple sessions and involves extensive placement in professional practice on-campus. Candidates develop advanced knowledge and skills underpinning the requirements of professional practice and develop research questions from clinical practice. Candidates will conduct clinical research while undertaking workplace learning in an enterprise. Candidates will produce a body of significant and original clinical research/investigation outcomes in the form of a dissertation. Expert skills in the design, implementation, analysis and communication of clinical research/investigation will be obtained, leading to significant original contributions to the discipline knowledge and professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

• Be able to produce significant and original research/investigation outcomes
• Be able to develop and demonstrate effective communication skills to present the results of original research/investigation outcomes for external review/examination against international standards and to communicate the results to peers, both internally and externally
• Be able to develop and demonstrate expert skills to design, prepare, undertake and complete, analyse, theorise and communicate research/investigation that provides an important and original contribution to discipline knowledge and/or professional practice
• Be able to demonstrate independent study and problem solving skills. Take responsibility for personal outcomes
• Be able to produce a research project dissertation.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

• Undertake placement in an on-campus enterprise which is relevant to the selected discipline
• Undertake an individual clinical research project
• Deliver presentations of the research outcomes
• Contribute to clinical discussion seminars
• Preparation and completion of a research dissertation.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a more than 150 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component. The duration of the Workplace Learning is a variable amount, distributed over an 18 month period. The Workplace Learning will be undertaken at an on-campus enterprise, which is relevant to the selected discipline. The Workplace learning will be undertaken in parallel with the clinical research project in a part-time capacity.
