Program Overview

The SPH534 Cultural Competency and Community Development as Speech Pathology Practice subject is designed to engage students with the history and current realities of Australia's Indigenous people. This subject critically reflects on the influence of Indigenous cultures on the accessibility and appropriateness of speech pathology services.


Subject Description

Students will develop their reflective practice skills by exploring their own values and beliefs, and critiquing speech pathology practices when working with linguistically and culturally diverse populations. The subject has a specific focus on Indigenous Australian people, languages, and culture, exploring the role of language and cultural maintenance in health and wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:


  • Critically reflect on their own knowledge, values, and experiences to identify personal learning goals relating to the development of cultural responsiveness, and strategies for achieving those goals.
  • Critically reflect on how knowledge of Indigenous Australian cultures, histories, and contemporary contexts facilitate or challenge current models of speech pathology practice and service provision.
  • Develop skills and knowledge in linguistic analysis that facilitate linguistically and culturally responsive speech pathology assessment and intervention practices.
  • Critique Indigenous Australian relationships with language and the role of language maintenance in health and wellbeing.
  • Apply research principles and procedures appropriate to Indigenous Australian people and their communities, to the evaluation of communication and/or swallowing needs.
