Introduction to BMS343 Evidence Based Complementary Medicine

The overall aim of this subject is for students to become critical users and readers of research and to be aware of the national and international context in which they work. Students will examine the nature of complementary medicine and its role in different health care systems. The subject is also designed to develop students' knowledge of both research processes and evidence-based practices (EBP) that support professional development and best practices within complementary medicine.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

• be able to describe the nature of complementary medicine use in both Australia and other countries
• be able to explain the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP)
• be able to evaluate the role of EBP within complementary medicine, particularly with respect to their own modality
• be able to critically reflect on their own practice with respect to EBP
• be able to explain what is meant by evidence in the context of EBP and apply this to complementary medicine
• be able to compare and contrast the major research paradigms that inform EBP
• be able to describe the primary research methods used for conducting research in complementary medicine practice
• be able to identify and critique ethical issues related to the conduct of complementary medicine research
• be able to critically appraise the research literature
• be able to utilise techniques and strategies for incorporating EBP into complementary health practices

This subject will cover the following topics:

• The global context of complementary medicine (including traditional and alternative medicine)
• Evidence-based practice and its place in complementary medicine
• Types of evidence
• The research process - from design to recommendations
• Examining research paradigms
• Interpreting data
• Critically appraising the research literature
• Implementation and evaluation of EBP into complementary medicine practice
