Introduction to DOH552 Advanced Restorative Implantology

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

- demonstrate communication and critical analysis skills in discussing the role and indications for removable versus fixed implant supported/retained prostheses
- demonstrate at a highly skilled, professional level, the ability to take impressions suitable for the provision of multi-unit implant supported/retained prostheses
- demonstrate advanced knowledge, critical analysis and communication skills in describing and understanding of the different materials available for the construction of implant supported/retained prosthesis
- demonstrate advanced knowledge, critical analysis and communication skills in describing the complications which are to be expected in the provision of implant supported/retained prostheses
Syllabus
This subject will cover the following topics:
- Advanced impression techniques in implant dentistry
- Materials available for use in the manufacture of implant supported/retained prostheses
- Prosthesis design in multi-unit implant supported/retained prostheses
- Prosthetic complications and their management in the implant patient
- Reading and interpreting scientific articles
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a 32-day Compulsory Workplace Learning component, requiring students to work with an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon or periodontist and a prosthodontist as mentors, with 4 case patients for the duration of the course at the mentor's practice.
Special Resources
Students require access to facilities at The Australian Dental Association (NSW Branch) Centre for Professional Development for 2X2 week face-to-face lectures, tutorials, and practical simulation clinic per subject.
