Program Overview

Program Overview

The Prep for Teaching Maths 3 (Statistics and Probability) subject is designed to address core numeracy skills required by teachers to demonstrate the minimum standard as set by the Australian Government. This subject is part of a suite of three Studylink enabling subjects and is a requirement for all students enrolled in an initial teacher education course.

Subject Information

Grading System

The grading system for this subject is SY/US.

Duration

The subject is one session in duration.

School

The subject is offered by the Faculty of Arts and Education.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • use statistical displays to compare sets of data, and evaluate statistical claims made in media
  • read boxplots to compare sets of data
  • calculate relative frequencies to estimate probabilities of simple and compound events
  • select and use appropriate problem-solving strategies
  • work confidently without a calculator in the content of the subject

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

  • interpretation of column charts, bar charts, histograms, and line plots of data
  • interpretation of mean, median, and mode of data
  • uses the range and standard deviation to discuss the usefulness of the mean, median, or mode as a representation of a set of data
  • finds the upper and lower quartiles of a set of data
  • uses box-and-whiskers plots and back-to-back stem-and-leaf plots to compare sets of data
  • calculates relative frequencies to calculate probabilities of simple events
  • uses Venn diagrams, tables, or tree diagrams to calculate the probabilities of compound events
