THM308 Production Workshop

This project-based subject is designed to critically engage students in the processes of theatre production. This subject consolidates and extends the skills that they have gained through previous study and practice - especially those skills which are required to sustain graduates as innovative and knowledgeable practitioners within professional arts/media contexts.

Assumed Knowledge

Students are assumed to have completed THM208 prior to enrolling in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

• be able to undertake one or more production roles in a full scale theatrical production
• be able to articulate a sophisticated, theory sensitive understanding of production practices associated with the production phases of artistic direction and project management for main stage, non-standard venues, and the theatricalisation of diverse social and cultural performance events
• be able to design a project and plan for the production management of that project by preparing a written concept proposal that defines a communication strategy, production role descriptions, schedules for managing the project, set model, budget and media kit

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

• Live and/or mediated production procedures relevant to the roles and responsibilities of production managers, associate directors, designers, stage/site managers, performers, dramaturgical researchers
• Creation of production documentation for the management of live and/or mediated performative events
• Developing a case study report that employs theory-sensitive concepts to analyse a full-scale theatrical event, its production process and its performative outcomes
• Research strategies for successfully developing and pitching a project proposal
