Introduction to VPA105 Typography and Publishing
This subject introduces the history, principles, and applications of typography as a means of expression and communication. It examines the relationship between type and image within the context of both print and web. Students explore page structure and the use of grids within single and double page print layouts as well as multiple web page layouts, beginning to build an appreciation of related production processes.
Availability
The subject is available in Session 2, with 60 students on campus at Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga campuses, and online at Wagga Wagga Campus.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify a variety of typefaces and have an understanding of their associated history, principles, and applications
- be able to demonstrate a critical approach to font selection for different applications
- be able to understand and demonstrate the principles of designing with type and image
- be able to employ grids to design a variety of print and web page layouts
- be able to demonstrate a critical approach to a variety of page layouts and information
- be able to work independently on digital design briefs
Syllabus
This subject will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to type: history, principles, and applications
- Selection of typefaces and their relationship to content, imagery, colour, and context
- Introduction to layouts and grids: print and web
- Introduction to hierarchy (visual and information), readability, and legibility, and their roles in the design solution
- Introduction to scanning, file sizes, formats, and colour spaces (CMYK, RGB, and web safe)
- Introduction to production processes
