Introduction to DOH344 Foundations of Oral Surgery
DOH344 Foundations of Oral Surgery is a subject that provides students with an introduction to and opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in the management of simple dental extractions. This includes diagnosis, treatment planning, execution, and post-operative follow-up, with a special focus on demonstrating appropriate understanding of the general principles of pharmacology relevant to dental care, pain control, and administering local anaesthetics.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the management of simple tooth extractions
- Demonstrate developing knowledge and skills relevant to the provision of simple safe local anaesthesia
- Demonstrate appropriate understanding of the general principles of pharmacology with particular relevance to dental care
- Develop a foundation of professional knowledge coupled with the surgical skills to treat cases within their ability
- Demonstrate a standard pattern of sound history taking, including medical assessment, examination, diagnostic analysis, and use of diagnostic aids to provide a sound oral surgical diagnosis
- Competently treat oral surgery problems related to the practice of general dentistry

This subject covers the following topics:
- History, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning
- Simple pain relief procedures
- Simple exodontia including extraction techniques and complications
- Infection Control and Work, Health, and Safety
- Mechanisms of drug action and principles of drug behaviour
- Membrane receptors
- Minor oral surgery instrumentation, surgical removal of teeth, and suturing
- Biopsies
- Wound healing
- Medical emergencies and management
- Analgesics and anti-inflammatories
- Systems pharmacology
Workplace Learning
The subject contains a 16-day compulsory Workplace Learning component, involving clinical training at CSU campus clinics and external NSW Health Oral Health Clinics under supervision.
