Introduction to NRS122 Essential Nursing Care: Foundation Skills
This subject aims to provide students with the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate foundation knowledge underpinning nursing skills in various practice areas, including health assessment and risk screening, maintaining and enhancing skin integrity, alteration in bowel and urinary function, pre and post operative care, and patient education at a beginning level.

Enrolment Restrictions
This subject is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing course and Bachelor of Nursing - Graduate Diploma of Clinical Practice (Paramedic).
Prerequisites
The prerequisites for this subject are BMS191 and (NRS112 or NRS191).
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Conduct and document a systematic, evidence-based nursing assessment and risk screen at a beginning level.
- Communicate clearly with team members, both in verbal handover and in written documentation.
- Participate in the planning and documentation of nursing care in consultation with individuals, significant others, and the interdisciplinary health care team.
- Provide basic health education to clients in an effective manner, including appropriate documentation.
- Describe and demonstrate safe and legal medication administration via identified routes.
- Demonstrate competence in calculations related to medication administration.
- Demonstrate a broad factual knowledge base pertaining to health assessment and risk screening, maintaining and enhancing skin integrity, alteration in bowel and urinary function, pre and post operative care, and patient education.

- Module 1: Potential and Actual Alterations in Skin Perfusion and Integrity
- Module 2: Potential and Actual Alteration in Bowel and Urinary Function
- Module 3: Health History and Assessment
- Module 4: Documentation of Assessment and Nursing Care
- Module 5: Peri-operative Care
- Module 6: Medication Foundation Skills
- Module 7: Health Education
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a compulsory workplace learning component of 80 hours, where students will undertake workplace learning in a variety of health care settings in a supernumerary capacity under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory residential school component of 4 days, which will include tutorials and assessment of students through Clinical Skills Labs/Simulation.
Special Resources
Distance Education students will be required to travel to a residential school.
