Introduction to NRS222 Essential Nursing Care: Mental Health Nursing

NRS222 Essential Nursing Care: Mental Health Nursing is a comprehensive subject that introduces students to the principles of mental health nursing, guided by recovery principles, a strengths-based framework, and an appreciation of trauma-informed care. Students will explore the lived experience of mental illness, considering the perspectives of consumers of mental health services and their carers.

The prerequisites for NRS222 are NRS121 and NRS123, or NRS293.


Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of NRS222, students should be able to:


  • Describe and apply the principles involved in providing person-centred and culturally competent care for all individuals experiencing mental health issues
  • Identify the key mental health disorders/illnesses and describe their prevalence, clinical features, treatments, co-existing health issues, and nursing interventions
  • Select, apply, and demonstrate mental health nursing skills and interventions used in the care of individuals experiencing mental ill health in a wide range of health care settings
  • Describe and explain pharmaceutical and treatments utilised for different mental health illness/disorders and nursing considerations
  • Describe and explain the ethical considerations and legal frameworks used in mental health nursing practice

  • Module 3: Mental Health Illness, Treatments and Nursing Interventions
  • Module 4: Complexities and Co-existing Issues
  • Module 5: Working with Mental Health Services

Workplace Learning

NRS222 contains a 10-day compulsory workplace learning component, where students will be placed in workplaces with a strong focus on mental health to develop their understanding of this area of nursing care.


Residential School

NRS222 contains a 1-day compulsory residential school, which includes tutorials, group work, and assessment of students through simulation.


Special Resources

Distance education students will be required to travel to a residential school.
