Introduction to DOH100 Clinical Practice and Theory 1
This subject introduces students to the fundamental knowledge and skills required in the Bachelor of Oral Health. Through classroom and simulation clinic participation, students begin to develop the cognitive and fine motor application skills needed for proficient oral health care delivery.
Subject Outlines
The concepts of clinical preparation and patient-centered care will be examined with a focus on instrumentation, dental materials, communication, and professionalism. The development of oral health disease mechanisms will be explored along with prevention and treatment modalities. Critical reflective thinking, along with evidenced-based practice standards and introductory epidemiology, are embedded in the subject content.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

- Demonstrate an emerging knowledge of the scope of oral health practice and the roles, skills, and scope of practice of all members of the oral health team in public, private, and community settings
- Establish concepts and skills in patient-centered care, which facilitate optimal oral health
- Demonstrate proficiency in identifying key aspects of the oral cavity
- Demonstrate professional behavior and attitudes at all times in all learning environments, including patient and simulation clinics
- Demonstrate beginner-level reflective practice and apply these reflective skills across all learning opportunities
- Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior and communication

- Introduction to Professional Issues
- Introduction to ethical practice
- Learning styles and skills needed to succeed in a University degree course
- The library and its databases
- Introduction and developing skills with IT
- Life-long learning and critical/reflective practice skills
- Introduction to patient-centered care and professionalism
- Effective communication skills
- Introduction and development of technical skills required in oral health therapy practice
- Introduction to collecting clinical records for oral health practice
- Nomenclature and terminology used in the Australian Health Care system
- Introduction to oral health assessment gathering
- Introduction to risk assessment concepts and the role of preventive care
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a 1-day compulsory Workplace Learning component, which is observation only, with a small assessment task allocated.
Special Resources
The subject utilizes existing clinical teaching areas in the Wagga Wagga CSU campus, with registered clinicians required to tutor/teach students in these environments.
