Program Overview
CHM115 Chemistry 1A
This subject covers many of the fundamental principles of chemistry and introduces students to current theories on the nature of atoms and the principles of bonding to form molecules. Relationships between bonding and the properties of molecules are explored and related to the behaviour of bulk matter including: chemical reactions; the properties of gases, liquids and solids; chemical equilibrium; and the behaviour of acids and bases. A practical component will ensure understanding of theoretical concepts as well as develop problem solving abilities. CHM115 covers the same content as CHM104, but on a delayed timeline (June residential school) for wine students involved in vintage. Students needing to attend April residential schools should enrol in CHM104.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Residential School
This subject contains a 4.5 day Compulsory Residential School. The nature of this subject requires students to have access to laboratory instrumentation. Laboratory classes provide a hands-on approach to the theory learned in this subject. Practical work in this subject also helps students to develop problem-solving skills. During the residential school for CHM115, students participate in a combination of practical classes and tutorials and sit their final practical and theory exams. The skills developed by the laboratory component of this subject relate to the following Chemistry Threshold Learning Outcomes:
- Formulating hypotheses, proposals, and predictions and designing and undertaking experiments in a safe and responsible manner.
- Applying recognised methods and appropriate practical techniques and tools and being able to adapt these techniques when necessary.
- Collecting, recording, and interpreting data and incorporating qualitative and quantitative evidence into scientifically defensible arguments.
- Appropriately documenting the essential details of procedures undertaken, key observations, results, and conclusions.
- Demonstrating a capacity for working responsibly and safely.
Special Resources
Students are required to attend the compulsory residential school which will involve travel expenses and a time commitment. Students will also be required to purchase a lab coat and safety goggles which are compulsory for lab-based practicals.
