Videogaming Studies (VES)
The Videogaming Studies program offers a range of courses that introduce students to the field of videogame and esports studies. The program examines the three components of the field: videogame studies, videogame production/design, and esports.
Courses
- VES 100 Introduction to Videogame and Esports Studies: This course introduces students to videogame and esports studies, examining the three components of the field and teaching students how to critically examine each area. No background in gaming is required, and access to special technology is not necessary.
- VES 100X Experimental Course: This number is reserved for experimental courses. Refer to the Course Schedule for current offerings.
- VES 200X Experimental Course: This number is reserved for experimental courses. Refer to the Course Schedule for current offerings.
- VES 230 Critical Approaches to Videogaming and Esports Studies: This course analyzes video gaming and esports cultures and values, as well as their interaction with society. The course teaches students the history, methodology, and theoretical approaches to videogaming and esports from various fields and disciplines.
- VES 300X Experimental Course: This number is reserved for experimental courses. Refer to the Course Schedule for current offerings.
- VES 400X Experimental Course: This number is reserved for experimental courses. Refer to the Course Schedule for current offerings.
- VES 401 Research Methodologies for Videogaming and Esports Studies: This 7-week course prepares students for their capstone project, engaging with videogame and esports studies, and honing research, writing, and speaking skills. Students will meet virtually with the professor and conduct asynchronous peer review.
- VES 402 Videogaming and Esports Studies Capstone: This class supports students completing a capstone project. The class has three virtual meetings, and students work independently, meeting with the professor as needed. The final product will be a creative project showcasing the student's skills and academic abilities, with two formal presentations delivering their work.
