Program Overview
Genetic Counseling Program
The Genetic Counseling Program at UNC Greensboro is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become competent genetic counselors. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC).
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission to the program, applicants must submit the following:
- Resume
- Personal statement (reflective essay)
- Brief introductory video
- Transcripts
- GRE scores
- Three letters of reference
Instructions for Applicants
In addition to the general application materials, applicants to the MS Genetic Counseling Program must submit the following:
Resume Instructions
The resume should contain information that highlights the experiences and skills developed as they relate to work as a graduate student or future in the field of genetic counseling. The resume should include:
- Academic information:
- List of undergraduate/graduate studies, including institution, dates attended, year of graduation, degree earned, major, and GPA
- Required prerequisite coursework, including course name, number, and grade earned
- Related experience:
- Genetic counseling exposure, including shadowing experiences or internships
- Crisis counseling
- Advocacy
- Laboratory or other research experience
- Leadership roles, professional development, or other relevant experiences
- Relevant employment:
- Dates, duration, and brief description of relevant employment experience
- Awards and honors:
- Description of awards or honors received
- Match:
- NMS Match ID number
- Length:
- Resumes should be 1-2 pages in length, with enough detail to provide a solid understanding of experiences and skills
Reflective Essay Instructions
The reflective essay should address the following:
- Describe how experiences have shaped perspective and prepared the applicant to enter graduate school and the field of genetic counseling
- Explain why the Genetic Counseling program at UNC Greensboro is a good fit for academic and personal growth The essay should be 2-3 pages in length, limited to 1500 words.
Introductory Video Instructions
The introductory video should be 2 minutes or less in length and capture the following:
- Introduction and unique perspective(s) to be brought to the field of genetic counseling
- Description of a step taken toward personal growth in the last year, including a specific example and impact on others
- Reference to how the current application cycle is different from previous cycles (if reapplying)
Additional Application Components
- Transcripts: Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for initial application review, but official transcripts must be received prior to enrollment
- Deadline: The application submission deadline is December 15
- Interviews: A subset of qualified applicants will be invited to campus for a personal interview with the Admissions Committee
Interview Process
The interview process consists of two parts:
- Initial video interviews: Short, video-based interviews with a program faculty member
- Full-day interviews: Virtual interviews, including an information session and opportunities to engage with current students and faculty members
Accreditation
The Genetic Counseling Program at UNCG is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC).
