Program Overview

Introduction to the UMass Chan Early Independence Fellows Program

The UMass Chan Early Independence Fellows Program is designed to empower the next generation of RNA giants. This program is ideal for outstanding graduate students or early-stage postdocs who are looking to launch their research careers.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, candidates must have completed their terminal degree within 24 months of the application deadline. International scholars are also eligible to apply, and UMass Chan will support visas for selected fellows.

Application

The application process involves submitting an anonymized research plan, a personal statement, and three recommendation letters. The anonymized research plan should focus on the science and ideas, without listing past publications, mentors, institutions, or identity.

Program Details

  • The program provides an annual budget of $440,000 for lab equipment and staff.
  • Fellows will have their own independent lab space and can hire their own staff and postdoctoral associates.
  • Graduate students will need to be co-mentored by tenure-track faculty members.
  • The program encourages acquiring additional funding, which will be in addition to the annual funding provided.
  • Fellows will receive mentored support for applying for grants and will have access to scientific writing support.

Career Development

  • The program is designed to be a stepping stone for fellows to become tenure-track investigators at UMass Chan or other institutions.
  • Fellows can apply for tenure-track positions at UMass Chan or other institutions after completing the program.
  • The program provides a formal pathway for moving from a non-tenure track assistant position to a tenure-track position.

Funding

  • The program provides an annual budget of $440,000 for lab equipment and staff.
  • Fellows are encouraged to acquire additional funding, which will be in addition to the annual funding provided.
  • The program does not provide a start-up package for equipment, but UMass Chan has a highly collegial and collaborative environment where equipment is shared within and across departments.

Miscellaneous

  • The program is open to dual-career couples, and UMass Chan will work with the fellow to help identify potential positions for their partner.
  • Fellows can use the science generated at UMass Chan during the program to apply for positions at other institutions.
  • The program has a fixed timeline, and fellows are expected to complete the program within the specified timeframe.
