Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program
Program Overview
Introduction to the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program
The Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) Training Program is a cornerstone of educational activities, offering training to providers since 1999. Initially, the program was exclusive to Massachusetts providers, but it expanded in 2001 to include participants from outside the state. By 2003, the training was being provided at out-of-state venues.
Program Overview
The TTS Core Training is an intensive, evidence-based training program consisting of two parts:
- A 10-hour online portion (TTS Training Part 1)
- A 3-day in-person session (TTS Core Training Part 2) Successful completion of this 2-part training qualifies as a training requirement to apply for the National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice.
Target Audience and Curriculum
The training is designed for individuals who deliver moderate to intensive tobacco treatment services within a healthcare or community setting. The curriculum addresses a set of core competencies for tobacco treatment specialists, which were first defined by the Massachusetts Certification Steering Committee in 1998 and later refined by the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD).
Accreditation and Equal Opportunity
The University of Massachusetts Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) Training Program is accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP). The program provides equal opportunity and access to all applicants, regardless of age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, and veteran's status.
