Introduction to the Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship

The Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship is a one-year clinical fellowship that provides comprehensive involvement in clinical, educational, and research activities. This fellowship offers excellent preparation for a career in academic radiology or private practice.


Program Highlights

  • The division of Cardiothoracic Imaging (CTI) at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) has been at the forefront of recent advances in CTI from both clinical and research perspectives.
  • The program provides a strong academic environment for fellowship training, with fellows involved in all aspects of clinical CTI under the supervision of the program director and CTI faculty.
  • Fellows receive mentoring, academic time, and support for teaching and research endeavors.
  • They are exposed to the full spectrum of cardiothoracic disorders and a variety of diagnostic imaging methods.

Program Goals

The program aims to provide fellows with learning opportunities in interventional pulmonology and cardiology, as well as in echocardiography, through close collaboration with clinical partners from pulmonology and cardiology. The CTI section interprets approximately 110,000 studies per year, with a faculty that includes 6 attendings devoted to teaching and/or research.


Department and Hospital

  • The Department of Radiology at UMMMC performs over 1 million studies per year across five hospitals and an outpatient imaging center.
  • The department has 65+ fellowship-trained radiologists and a 24/7/365 Emergency Radiology Division.
  • It trains 5 residents per year and has 9 dedicated clinical fellowships.
  • The main department and outpatient imaging center are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including MRIs, CTs, and an enterprise-wide PACS system.

Research Experience

  • The CTI section has a highly active research program with weekly research meetings.
  • The section is a recognized leader in several areas of CTI research and provides a robust research infrastructure.
  • Each fellow is encouraged to perform one original research project under the guidance of faculty members, with allotted academic time dedicated to research.

Elective, Vacation, and Conference Time

  • Each fellow is allocated four weeks of elective time to rotate through thoracic oncology, pediatric thoracic imaging, or thoracic intervention.
  • Fellows are also allotted 4 weeks of vacation per year and five days of conference time.

    • ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)
  • Requirements:
    • Applicants must have completed a radiology residency program accredited by the ACGME.
    • Applicants must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent.
    • Acceptance is contingent on obtaining an unrestricted Massachusetts medical license by the start date of the fellowship.
