Neuroradiology Fellowship
Program Overview
Introduction to the Neuroradiology Fellowship Program
The Neuroradiology Fellowship Program at UMass Chan Medical School provides trainees with an in-depth one-year comprehensive neuroimaging training experience and offers exposure to all aspects of neuroradiology practice. The goals of the fellowship are to offer fellows high-quality experiences in the areas of education, patient care, professionalism, and research.
Program Overview
UMass Memorial Medical Center is a 781-bed tertiary care hospital and the clinical partner of UMass Chan Medical School. UMass Memorial is Worcester County's only Level I Trauma Center, comprehensive stroke center, and the referral center for central New England. The Department of Radiology at UMass Memorial performs over 1 million studies per year, across five hospitals and an outpatient imaging center. Current faculty in the department include 65+ fellowship-trained Radiologists. The department trains 5 Residents per year (20 total). The Division of Neuroradiology comprises 10 Neuroradiologists and interprets approximately 65,000 neuroimaging studies yearly.

- Academic Time: 24 days per year, which can be consolidated into blocks for specific projects
Neuroradiology Conferences
Various interdepartmental and divisional conferences are held almost every day of the week, and fellows are expected to conduct these conferences under the guidance of neuroradiology faculty. These include:
- Head and neck tumor board, two Mondays of the month
- Neurosurgery-neuroradiology conference, every Tuesday
- Stroke conference, every Tuesday
- Pediatric neurology-neuroradiology conference, one Tuesday of the month
- Neuro tumor board, two Wednesdays of the month
- Neuroradiology case conference, every Wednesday
- Neurology-neuroradiology conference, two Thursdays of the month
- Neuroradiology fellow didactic lecture conference, two Thursdays of the month
- Endocrinology conference, one Friday of the month
- Epilepsy conference, one or two Fridays of the month
- 8 to 10 journal clubs in a year
Imaging Facilities and Locations
The primary location for the Neuroradiology fellowship is the UMass Memorial Medical Center at the University campus. Fellows are based at the University Campus for almost all of the fellowship and read some of the neuroimaging studies performed at other hospitals of UMass Memorial Health Care from the University Campus. Facilities include:
- UMass Memorial Medical Center University Campus
- UMass Memorial Medical Center Memorial Campus
- UMass Memorial Medical Imaging Center (UMMIC)
- Community sites, including UMass Memorial Health – Harrington, UMass Memorial Health – HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, and UMass Memorial Health – Marlborough Hospital
Scanners and Annual Imaging Volume
- 9 CT scanners, including one 128 slice Siemens dual energy CT
- 9 clinical MR systems
- 1 PET/CT
- 2 state-of-the-art neurointerventional Philips biplane machines
- Nearly 1 million radiology imaging studies a year
- 80,000 diagnostic neuroimaging studies
- Each fellow performs approximately 30-50 angiograms and 50-60 lumbar puncture/myelograms
Research
Fellows are encouraged to participate in current research projects or initiate projects under the supervision of the faculty. There are many opportunities to get involved in basic science and translational research. Academic time is provided throughout the year for the fellow to work on research interests. Fellows are expected to have completed one manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and at least one abstract in a societal annual conference by the end of the year. Resources include:
- The New England Center for Stroke Research
- The Advanced MRI Center
- Image Processing and Analysis Core (iPAC)
Fellowship Information, Requirements, and Application
The program participates in the NRMP-sponsored Neuroradiology Match and follows the calendar set forth by the NRMP.
Requirements
By the time they begin their fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School, applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited radiology residency program or equivalent. Acceptance is contingent on obtaining a Massachusetts medical license by the start date of the Fellowship. Applicants should also review UMass Chan Medical School GME eligibility requirements.
