Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education

The Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education provides a pathway into teaching for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree outside of education. These comprehensive programs offer the ability to receive a conditional teaching license in the state of Nevada after one semester and continue through the Nevada standard licensing requirements and master's degree.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:


  • Apply knowledge of how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas.
  • Use understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments.
  • Work with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning.
  • Use the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) they teach to create learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners.
  • Connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.
  • Successfully use multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher's and learner's decision making.

Requirements

Admission Requirements

  • A one-to two-page letter of intent of professional goals and rationale for pursuing the degree.
  • The names and contact information of two professional references.
  • Unofficial or official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities.
  • General Knowledge Exams (Praxis Core, CBEST, GRE scores, or ACT/SAT).
  • Passing Praxis II Content Knowledge Exam in the specific subject area.

Degree Requirements

  • Completion of all required courses in the plan.
  • Completion of a minimum of 33 credits with a minimum GPA of 3.00.
  • Successful completion of the culminating experience.

The program offers eight subplans:


  1. Art Education: Total credits required - 33.
    • Course requirements include Teachers as Action Researchers, Teaching Secondary Art, Secondary Art Methods and Assessment, and more.
    • Culminating experience: Secondary Education Curriculum.
  2. English/Language Arts Education: Total credits required - 33.
    • Course requirements include Teachers as Action Researchers, Assessment in Literacy, Teaching Secondary English, and more.
    • Culminating experience: Secondary Education Curriculum.
  3. Health/Physical Education: Total credits required - 33.
    • Course requirements include Teachers as Action Researchers, Teaching Secondary Health/PE 1, Teaching Secondary Health/PE 2, and more.
    • Culminating experience: Secondary Education Curriculum.
  4. Mathematics Education: Total credits required - 33.
    • Course requirements include Diagnostic Assessment School Mathematics, Teachers as Action Researchers, Teaching Secondary Mathematics, and more.
    • Culminating experience: Secondary Education Curriculum.
  5. Science Education: Total credits required - 33.

Graduation Requirements

Students must successfully complete the culminating experience and apply for graduation up to two semesters prior to completing their degree requirements. All required forms must be submitted to the graduate college via the Grad Rebel Gateway.
