Ph.D. Program in Natural Sciences
The Ph.D. program in Natural Sciences is a 3-year program that consists of 180 credits. The program includes a training component (30 credits) and a research project that culminates in a dissertation (150 credits).
Description of the Program
The research project is the main component of the program and is carried out under the supervision of two or more supervisors. The project is often part of a larger research project, and in many cases, the student will also receive support from colleagues in the research environment.
The training component consists of courses, and the composition of the courses is individually tailored. It is mandatory to take courses in scientific theory, ethics, and communication.
Upon completion, the candidate must give a trial lecture on a prescribed topic and defend the dissertation in a public disputation.
Ph.D. candidates employed by the university often have a 25% teaching obligation, which can include other tasks such as dissemination and recruitment work or administrative tasks.

Candidates who have completed the Ph.D. program in Natural Sciences will have the following total learning outcome defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:
- Knowledge: The candidate will be at the forefront of knowledge in their field, have insight into relevant research ethics issues, and have knowledge of general scientific theory, problem areas, and research methods.
- Skills: The candidate will be able to evaluate the suitability and application of field-specific methods and processes, both in research and in professional development projects. They will be able to contribute to the development of new knowledge, new theories, methods, and interpretations within their field.
- General Competence: The candidate will be able to make decisions on a professional and complex basis, exercise their research with professional integrity, and have the ability to lead projects and processes in accordance with research ethical requirements and guidelines.

Structure of the Program
The program consists of a research project (150 credits) and a training component (30 credits).
Teaching and Examination Language
The normal language of instruction and examination is English, but it can also be Norwegian.
The Ph.D. dissertation is written in English or Norwegian, and the disputation takes place in the same language as the dissertation.
The trial lecture is usually held in English, but if circumstances permit, it can also be held in Norwegian or Scandinavian.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the Ph.D. program requires:
- A 5-year higher education degree with a total scope of 300 credits
- A master's degree with a thesis (120 credits)
- A bachelor's degree with a scope of 180 credits and a master's degree with a scope of 120 credits
- Other educations of equivalent scope and duration may also qualify for admission
The master's degree must include a self-study master's thesis.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must document sufficient English language skills, either through formal education or by passing an internationally recognized test.
Financing
Admission to the Ph.D. program requires satisfactory financing of the study. For Ph.D. candidates employed by the university, this is largely arranged upon recruitment.
External candidates must document that the study is sufficiently financed, with salary and operating funds equivalent to a doctoral fellowship.
