Program Overview

Master's Program in Community Planning

The Master's program in Community Planning provides students with broad competence in planning and development work at the local, national, and international levels. As a master's student, you will be part of a research environment and receive active follow-up from our academic staff.

Description of the Study

The Master's program in Community Planning gives students qualifications to perform research-based planning and investigation tasks. Good community planning requires cross-disciplinary analysis, communication, and cooperation. The study is therefore built on relevant contributions from sociology, political science, social geography, and social anthropology. Students will become familiar with theory and research methods that cross disciplinary boundaries, but can also delve deeper into theory and methodology.

The study consists of a master's thesis (40 credits), compulsory courses (50 credits), and elective courses (30 credits). The elective courses provide both an opportunity for specialization and for achieving academic breadth. Students choose their own theme for the master's thesis, and proposals for current themes will also be presented to the students.

Job Opportunities

Graduates in Community Planning usually get jobs right after completing their education. The degree provides good career opportunities in the private and public sectors and in the voluntary organization sector. Relevant professions include community planner, area planner, administrative positions related to community development, project and investigation work. At the same time, the master's degree provides a basis for further research training with a view to working in the institute sector and at universities and colleges.
