Program Overview

Program Overview

The Nordsamisk fra begynnernivĺ program is a one-year study program offered by UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the North Sami language and its cultural context.

Program Description

The program consists of 4 individual courses with a total scope of 60 study points, primarily focused on language. The program starts in the fall and spans two semesters. Students will learn to express themselves orally and in writing in correct, fluent, and natural North Sami. They will also receive training in understanding the content of Sami media and public debate, and will be able to participate in conversations on current topics.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, students must have general study competence or real competence. The program is tailored for students who do not speak Sami from before, and it has a rapid progression, which requires significant individual effort.

Application Deadline

There is no admission in 2026, and the next admission will be in 2027. The application deadline is April 15, 2027, for applicants with real competence, and March 1 for applicants with other qualifications.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the program, students will be able to:

  • Understand North Sami speech and participate in conversations on everyday topics
  • Write short and long texts in Sami that are understandable to others
  • Read newspapers, magazines, and children's and youth literature in North Sami
  • Use digital language tools to support their language learning and maintenance

Job Prospects

The program can be used in literature and cultural mediation, publishing, media, public administration, information work, library and archival work, tourism, and advertising, among other fields.

Access to Further Studies

The program can be used as part of a bachelor's program with elective courses. After completing the program, students can take a semester with advanced courses in North Sami, which can provide a basis for further studies in North Sami at a native language level.

Program Structure

The program consists of 4 individual courses with a total scope of 60 study points. The study plan for the program is available, and it outlines the courses that can be taken in the program.

Language of Instruction

The language of instruction is North Sami and Norwegian.

Teaching and Assessment

The teaching, work, and evaluation methods are based on the individual course's character and content. In all courses, there are work requirements that must be met before the final exam can be taken. The exam arrangement varies from course to course, but examples of exam arrangements include written school exams, home exams, or semester assignments. A graded letter scale from A to F is used, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. For more information on work requirements, exam arrangements, and grading, see the individual course descriptions.

Quality Assurance

The program is evaluated every time it is offered. The program board decides which methods to use and how the evaluation will be documented. All courses that are part of the education are evaluated the first time they are offered. The program board decides which other courses will be evaluated during the program period.
