Program Overview
The TYS-6011 program is a 15-credit course offered by the University of Tromsř, focusing on German language and culture for students in the 5th to 10th grades.
Admission Criteria
To be eligible for the program, students must:
- Have completed a teacher education program or another relevant pedagogical education that qualifies them to teach in the 5th to 10th grades.
- Be employed in a position that allows them to test pedagogical approaches in their own classroom.
- Have prior knowledge of German equivalent to TYS-0100 (Introduction to German) or have lived in a German-speaking country for an extended period.
Program Content
The program covers various aspects of the German language, including:
- Basic grammatical knowledge (morphology, syntax, and phonetics)
- Introduction to German literature with a focus on its use in school teaching
- Introduction to third-language didactics, focusing on language learning and language mediation
- Practical language skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking
- Critical use of German-language sources for gathering information and deepening knowledge in specific subjects
- Use of digital tools in German language teaching
Teaching Methods
The program is taught as an online course, utilizing a digital learning platform. It is divided into five modules, each covering different areas of the German language and didactics. Students work individually and in groups, completing tasks and projects that contribute to their learning and reflection.
Assessment
The program includes several assessment components:
- Four smaller assignments at the end of each module (1-4)
- Three mandatory work requirements that combine language learning with didactic problem-solving
- A final exam consisting of four parts:
- A written assignment on children's and youth literature
- A didactic exam on festivals and customs in German-speaking countries
- A didactic exam on the use of children's and youth literature in teaching
- A oral didactic exam on current events
Each part of the final exam accounts for 25% of the total grade. The exam is graded on a scale from A to E, with A being the highest grade. If a student fails one part of the exam, they must retake that part.
Language of Instruction
The program is taught in both Norwegian and German.
Credits and Duration
The program is worth 15 credits and is designed to be completed over one semester.
