Program Overview


Introduction to the University Program

The University of Troms½ offers a comprehensive program in Examen Philosophicum, which is a mandatory course for most bachelor's degree programs. This program is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of philosophical concepts and theories.

Program Content

The program is organized around five themes: human nature, knowledge, ethics, politics, and the concept of nature and science. Students will explore philosophical discussions related to human nature and activity, human knowledge and knowledge production, fundamental questions related to moral and political action, and scientific thinking and different perceptions of nature.


Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the program, students will have the following learning outcomes:


  • Knowledge and Understanding: Explain what the questions are about, explain philosophical concepts used to discuss them, and explain central theories that attempt to answer them.
  • Skills: Apply philosophical concepts and theories in new contexts, identify argumentation in a text, evaluate and criticize arguments at a basic level.
  • General Competence: Reflect independently and critically, express themselves in an academic manner, participate in an oral academic discussion, and formulate an academic text.

Teaching and Examination

The program consists of 11 weeks of pre-recorded video lectures and seminars (2 hours per week). The seminars are tailored to different fields of study without creating any obligations for future studies.

  • Date: May 21-31, 2024 (oral examination), May 7, 2024 (assignment submission)
  • Weighting: 40% (oral examination), 60% (assignment)
  • Duration: 20 minutes (oral examination)
  • Grading Scale: A-E, fail

Mandatory Work Requirements

  • 70% attendance at seminar teaching is a prerequisite for being able to take the exam.
  • Individual semester assignment (1800-2200 words).

Continuation Examination

There is no continuation examination in this program. For a new exam attempt (new ordinary exam), there is no requirement that previously passed partial exams must be taken again. Applies to partial exams passed in 2023 or later.
