Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine (MMed.Int.Med) Programme

The Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine (MMed.Int.Med) programme of Universiti Sains Malaysia is a specialist training programme for qualified medical practitioners to become internal medicine physicians. Established in 1988, the programme has produced many internal medicine specialists in the country. It is a conjoint programme with six other universities: Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.

Training Requirement

The training programme is divided into three phases: PI, PII, and PIII.

  • In PI (year one), candidates may continue their training in general internal medicine at their sponsor-agreed institution or with USM in a (2 + 2) years schedule framework.
  • In PII (years two and three), candidates undergo a minimum of 8 subspecialty rotations, with most lasting 12 weeks and some over 6 weeks.
  • In PIII (the final year), candidates function as clinical registrars, preparing them to be future internal medicine consultants. Research and development play a significant role, and candidates must write a research dissertation to be defended during an exit viva.

Exam Requirement

  • Prior to entering the programme, candidates must qualify through the MEDEX Internal Medicine exam.
  • Candidates must take two tests during the programme: the Phase II Professional Examination (including clinical and theoretical components) and the exit viva for the research dissertation.
